Two cross-country teams from Stanly schools qualified for the state meet with their efforts at the 2023 NCHSAA 1A Midwest Regionals.

Men’s Results

Joshawa Huneycutt broke the tape at the 1A Midwest Regional meet, taking first place comfortably with a time of 16:47.84. Second place went to South Davidson’s Ethan Byerly (17:38.11).

Eli Thompson finished second for South and 15th overall in 18:51.71, followed on his team by Hayden Jernigan (22nd-19:24.09), Naylen Hetland (32nd-20:03.37) and Cohen Whitley (38th-20:36.49).

As a team, South Stanly finished fourth and qualified for the state meet with 103 points. South Davidson earned the regional title with 34 points, followed by the N.C. Leadership Academy (94) and Mount Airy (98).

Individually, Albemarle senior Reyli Alvarado qualified for the state meet finishing 10th with a time of 18:34.96.

Women’s Results

The Gray Stone women’s cross country team took third place overall as a team, qualifying the Knights for the 1A state meet this Saturday in Kernersville at the Ivey Redmon Complex.

Gray Stone, who won the 1A state title in 2015, took third with 98 points. Bishop McGuinness earned the regional crown with the low score of 52, with Cornerstone Charter (65) finishing second. Elkin (105) also qualified for the state meet.

Grace Eppeheimer was the top finisher for the Knights placing 12th overall in 24:20.32. Anaston Trexler was second place for Gray Stone with a 22nd place finish in 25:46.18, followed on the team by Addyson Carter (27th-26:13.07), Daleiah Waters (28th-26:29.42) and Mylee Swaringen (31st-26:59.19).
