LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Vote to raise debt ceiling

Published 2:03 pm Monday, May 15, 2023

Rep. Dan Bishop is our U.S. Congressman for Stanly County. He has already voted for so many things that would harm middle and lower-income folks like most of us who live here, so I do not understand why anyone would want to support him.

He wants to vote against raising the debt ceiling which would allow the U.S. to pay for what we have already voted on, not for anything new. Not raising the debt ceiling means Social Security, veterans benefits, Medicare, Medicaid, etc. will stop. It’s like I make a commitment to pay my bills, but then turn my back and say nope, not gonna do it.

Mr. Bishop and others who are refusing to support raising the debt ceiling are either crazy or power hungry or both.

We have all heard economists and the U.S. treasurer say that if we fail to pay our debts, it will be catastrophic both to our nation and to the world’s economy. There will be an immediate recession and our country will no longer be considered a safe place for anyone in the world to invest money here.

Mr. Bishop, vote for raising the debt ceiling before June 1. Let’s pay our debts already due and then talk about what to do with the next budget — shall we say a balanced budget?
