At Monday’s meeting of the Stanly County Board of Commissioners, the board unanimously approved a request by Sheriff Jeff Crisco to purchase vehicles ahead of schedule.
Crisco said he learned the Dodge Chargers his department planned to purchase in six or seven months may not be available from the vendor.
The sheriff said Dodge would not be making any more of the Charger sedan model until 2025, adding SUVs would be the only vehicles available for that time.
Overall, the cost of the eight vehicles will be $296,000, Crisco said. The cost, he said, is $55,000 less than the same number of Durangos, $100,000 less for Ford Interceptors and nearly $150,000 less for Tahoes.
“If we can go ahead and get these, we are saving the county a nice sum of money,” Crisco said.
The vehicles will not be outfitted and put into service until July 1, 2024, because of the costs of outfitting the vehicles with the necessary equipment.
